We woke up at 5am on Sunday and were on the road to Denton by 5:30am. Setting up in transition by 6:15am. The Denton Monster Tri was the first for my sister in law, Suzanne. She was excited and so was I. The swim was short - only 250yrds, and in an indoor pool! We were in the high 300's, so we had to stand around a bit before we could start. It was fun chit chatting with the people around us. Fritz was great getting up early with no complaints and was our designated photographer.
The swim was perfect. I had so much energy and did not get winded at all. I even passed a couple of people, which is always a good feeling. Jumped out at the end and ran to my bike.
It was surprisingly warm - even a little humid. I tossed on my shorts, shirt, socks, bike shoes, helmet, sun glasses, and gloves and headed out to the 16 mile bike course. Wow - toughest ride ever - rolling hills and a few climbs. PLUS, we has 21mph winds! It was an 8 mile out and back. The second half was the worst with a gradual incline and a steep long hill at the end. I just kept my legs pumping and got through it after about an hour and a half. Actually felt good getting off the bike. I thought my legs would feel woozy, but they didn't. I switched to my running shoes and tossed on my ball cap for the 5k to the finish.
I love to Tri! I love the process of getting my gear ready for the transition area. When I'm in the pool, I love to swim. When I'm on my bike, I love to bike. Although I struggle with running, I absolutely love the runners high. I love the feeling of accomplishment when I cross the finish line. I also love the atmosphere that exists during fun tri's like the Monster Tri. Although there are serious triathletes competing, there are more less experienced folks - all different sizes and abilities. Everyone is excited, some are nervous. I love how everyone cheers each other on - 'doing great', 'keep pumping', 'this is your race', 'you go girl'. Although I am now one of the larger girls, I am so glad I'm not letting this bother me. I can't avoid awkward moments like hanging out in my swimsuit before the start. This is the body I have at this point and I am gong to LIVE in it!
