My First Carb Nite

Well I did it!  I made some modifications to my plan and ended up eating more than I was expecting, but I was at an Italian restaurant, my kids ordered tasty stuff, it was my birthday… you get the picture.

I completed my birthday Tri, as recorded on my Garmins. (My swim was at 5am, I don’t know why it is recording 12pm).  I had my breakfast at 9am and had absolutely no appetite for lunch.   I ran a bunch of errands with my husband which included a trip to the Cheesecake Factory to purchase my slice of heaven.  I definitely felt like I depleted my glycogen stores, which was what I was after.  I burned a total of 2918 calories and took in 2655 for the day, so I actually still had a deficit.

I measured my glucose and ketones just before I started Carb Nite at 3:30pm.  My glucose was at an all-time low of 65 and my ketones were at 1.9.  About an hour and a half after I started, my glucose had spiked to 122.  Just before my dinner, it was 97.  Just before the delicious cheesecake, it was 87 and then it went up to 104.  So I’m pretty sure I got my insulin spike I was looking to accomplish.

So I did enjoy my first couple of bites of carbs in the beginning, but as the night went along I became full and very sleepy.  Although I ate a lot more than I had planned, I still felt like I was in control.  I had absolutely no binge anxiety, which makes me believe something has changed in me after almost 8 months of no sugar.  I ended up going to bed at 8:30pm, my now 6 year old put me to bed!  I had the BEST night of sleep!!  My alarm woke me up at 4:45am and I felt great!  This really surprised me because I really thought I would feel a bit sick from all the bread I ate, but no – felt great!  I had no appetite, but forced myself to have some eggs and bacon about 9am.  I was extremely compliant on my very low carb, eating only 20 grams carbs.  This morning, I was surprised to see I am back in ketosis.  I will continue to eat ~30 carbs a day until my next Carb Nite, which I have scheduled for Thursdays.  I plan to not weigh myself until next Thursday, so we will need to wait and see if Carb Nite gives me the results I’m expecting.
