June 8, 2013                              206.4   Start Keto Diet

I started testing my blood ketones.  I started out with the  NovaMax Plus blood glucose/blood ketone meter that you can get free at http://www.novacares.com/cwd.php. (I found this out by checking out Jimmy Moore's N=1 Nutritional Ketosis experiment that he discusses on his blog http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/jimmy-moores-n1-experiments-nutritional-ketosis-day-1-30/14409.  So much good information from THE low carb guru Jimmy!).  The 1st time I tested I hit 2.1 (post 4 mile run), which was great (NK goal is .5 - 3 millimolar), but then some mornings I would be so low the monitor didn't measure.  I did some research and started to incorporate more MCT (medium chain triglycerides).  I bought a Precision Extra meter and strips and now I am in the 1- 2.5 range in the afternoon. (Ebay is the best place to find this stuff). This is increasing my confidence knowing that I am hitting the correct range.

To increase my MCTs, I started to incorporate Bullet Proof Coffee.  Strong black coffee. 2 Tbsp. of coconut oil, and 1 Tbsp. of Kerry Gold butter.  I know, I know... it sounds so odd - full of fat (good fat), but it taste good, increases ketone production, and you feel absolutely amazing after.  I feel no hunger until 5-6 hrs later.  I feel this has really contributed to my 2 lb loss this week.
