God is in the Podcast

I absolutely believe God works through others to answer our prayers.  I have prayed so much for God to help me solve my weight issues.  He is doing this by bringing certain people into my life.  Some are in person and some are in the virtual world.  Here are the most notable to date that are positively affecting my journey:

1.       Fat Shows, or as my husband calls it, fat porn.

a.       It all started with ‘The Biggest Loser’.  I have watched every season.  Although I feel it is a bit unrealistic with the ranch and the all day workouts, seeing the contestants totally change their appearance shows me that it is possible to change. I would love to experience this (on Bob’s team of course), but not going to happen.

b.      Heavy – only if I had an extra $50,000 to go to the Hilton Head, SC resort to lose my weight.  That would be a dream.  Again, it is seeing people change to show it is possible.

c.       Extreme Home Makeover – Weight Loss Edition – Oh I love me some Chris Powell.  I have the worst crush on him.  All I can say is that I would work my ass off for Chris if I was on his show.  He lives here in the Valley of the Sun and does appearances every once in awhile.  I have not drawn up the courage to go.  I don’t know what I would do in the presence of that man!

2.       Audio Books – I have a long commute to work (1hr each way), so I initially started to listen to audio books to pass the time.

a.       You on a Diet – Dr Oz and Dr Roizen.  Great info on the whole digestive process

b.      Why We Get Fat – Gary Taubes – this book just bugged me when I first listened to it.  I thought he was crazy for saying that saturated fat is good for you and grains are not.  Totally contradicted what Dr. Oz was saying.  But, after being educated by various podcasts that I respect, I realized he was right!  Still hate the use of the word – adiposity or adipose  tissue.

c.       South Beach Diet – Dr Arthur Agatston and The Zone – Dr Barry Sears.  Great info on low carb alternatives and macronutrient breakdown.

3.       My Fast Doctor – I am not going to mention her name or program, but it is a fast that I did for 4 months in 2007.  I lost over 50lbs and got to my lowest weight ever!  She changed my life.  I never thought I could do it – get down to where I really want to be, but I did.  The biggest boost to my self efficacy (love that term Heather  from Half Size Me) I had my Biggest Loser moment when I went back east for a family wedding.  People were amazed at how I looked.  Friends I had not seen in years did not even recognize me.  I went from wearing a size 20 down to 10.  For the first time in my life, I was not a fat girl.  I had so much confidence.  It allowed me to experience exercise like I never have.  BUT, it did not last.  Slowly I have been gaining that weight back.  I do not know how much back because I am terrified of the scale, but 16’s are tight on me.  I need to get back to that girl I was 5 years ago!  But, I need to do it the right way.

4.       Weight Watcher Leaders – I’ve probably joined and rejoined WW 8 or 9 times since moving to Arizona 20 years ago.  Although I have not found consistency with this program, I have really been motivated by some very good leaders.  I am toying with the idea of going back.

5.       Podcasts – My favorite!  I switched from audio books to Podcasts once I discovered the cost – Free!  I would say I am most addicted to this path God has chosen.  My commute, 2hrs a day, is spent listening to this wonderful source of information.  I even spend time during work listening ( I can multi-task!) so I can jot down notes.  I don’t just listen to them once.  I often go back to catch information I may have missed.  Here are my favorite:

a.       Dishing up Nutrition www.weightandwellness.com   Darlene Kvist established The Nutritional Weight and Wellness organization in Minnesota.  Her radio show is turned into a weekly podcast and is full of nutrition education.  I’ve learned so much from this show. I even used their nutrition counseling service over the phone and had a custom meal plan created to follow.

b.      Jimmy Moore – all his podcasts – Living La Vida Low Carb , Jimmy Moore Presents the Low Carb Experts, and Low Carb Conversations.  He has really opened my eyes about low carb and how important it is to control blood glucose levels.  Diabetes scares me and is in my path if I do not change.

c.       Balance Bites - Diane Sanfilippo and Liz Wolfe give information on eating real food, with a focus on the Paleo lifestyle.

d.      The Jillian Michaels Show – Just cuz I miss the all inspiring Jillian from The Biggest Loser

e.      Half Size Me (www.halfsizeme.com) – my all time favorite!  This is the one I most relate to.  Heather opens her show with very helpful information and then interviews people going through the same journey.  It feels like a virtual Weight Watchers meeting.  It’s exposing me to all the great weight loss blogs out there on the web. So frigin’ inspirational.  It’s where I get my most motivation.

I am truly blessed to have these influences in my life!
