2014 Tri for the Cure AZ

First of all, this is my 100th Blog Post!  Wow!  What's even better is I get to blog about my favorite event, Tri for the Cure!

Tri for the Cure in 2009 was my first ever triathlon and I've done it every year since! This year was my 6th time.  What was great about this year was a friend of mine, Andrea,  completed this as her first Tri.  It was so fun to see her excitement as she crossed the finish line. She is hooked and I'm sure I'll be seeing her at upcoming events.

This is an all woman event that raises money for Breast Cancer research. Everyone has been affected by breast cancer one way or another.  For me, it is for my niece, Mikayla's, birth mom Renee. She was in her early 30's when the cancer came around for the second time.  She had just started chemo when she discovered she was pregnant.  She opted not to continue with the chemo and the cancer turned terminal.  She selected my sister, Vicki, and her husband to adopt her baby.  Mikayla was born a bit premature and has had some challenges along the way, but what a gift Renee brought into this world. It is with these events that I can contribute to this cause!

This is the 4th year that my sister and I have made a Sistah's Weekend for this event.  The venue is over an hours drive, so we opt to get a hotel room the night before. We started off Saturday and picked up our race packets and then drove to Chandler, AZ.  We checked into the hotel and then we were off to the outlet mall for some serious shopping.  We had a great dinner and then got plenty of rest for the big day.

Our alarms went off at 4am and we were ready to go.  We set-up transition at 5:30am and the hung out until the 7am start.  The start is organized by age.  My sister was #144 and I was #150.  She was in the water 3mins before me, but I passed her after about 250 meters.  This is the only part I can beat her at, so I made sure I did!  I knew I was having a good swim and finished with the 400 meters after 10:37, a Personal Best!  Last year I did it in 12:50. Then it was off to the 8 mile bike and I finished at 33:33, another Personal Best!  Last year I did it in 40:13.  The finish is a 2 mile run.  I finished in 27:22.  I've done the run faster before, but I again beat my previous year of 29:07.  Overall I finished 1:18:00, beating previous year's 1:22:10.   I was so excited!  It's pretty obvious all my swimming is paying off. Now I really want to work on my biking and running.

After the drive home, my husband and I had a date at the ball park.  It was our final spring training game for the Texas Rangers.  I just had to have a beer.  Of course, I probably didn't need the 25oz bomber!  Oh well, it was a great weekend by far and today is a new day!
