Surprise Reverse Sprint Recap

I had a great race on Sunday!  The last Tri I did last May was the same - Surprise Reverse Maxi Tri, with minor differences:

Run was 3.0 miles vs 3.3 miles
Bike was 8 miles vs 14 miles
              Swim - same 400 yrds

I got up about 5am and was out the door on my bike at 5:50am.  The event was only about a 1/2 mile away.  I love that!  I was racked and setting up my transition area by 6:00am.  I had no one to meet because my sister ditched me for Vegas, but that was OK. I ran into a guy I meet during my swim workouts in Surprise this summer and we chatted about the race. There was a long wait because the kids race had to complete before we could start. There were 3 types - Maxi, Mini, and Duo.  There were only 50 participants in the Maxi - 30 men and 20 women.  I knew I would be last especially because there were no other plus size athletes, but that didn't bother me.   Finishing last > DNF!

We lined up for the start of the run around 7:30am and then we were off.  We ran about 3/4 mile to a water station, ran back, and then repeated.  There was an older gentleman in his 60's and me at the back of the pack.  I wasn't able to take him in the run, but I had a faster transition to the bike and was able to stay ahead of him to the finish.  It doesn't bother me to be last, but if I can beat a senior citizen, I'm gonna do it!

I felt strong on the run and the bike.  When I came into the pool area, I had my own cheering squad - my husband, youngest daughter, mother, and niece. I was not tired at all and had a nice swim.  I finished in 1 hr 26 mins, compared to 2 hrs and 4 mins in May.  I knew the course was a bit shorter for the run and 6 miles shorter on the bike, but I felt like my performance was better and it was in all 3 events:

Improved my running pace from 15:31 to 12:10
Improved my biking from 13.5 mph to 14.2 mph
Improved my swimming from 14:29 to 11:11

Since the field was so small, I decided to stick around for the awards. They go 5 deep in all age groups, so I knew I would walk away with something and I did - a nice 4th place ribbon.

This was the first Tri  I've done since becoming keto adaptive.  I felt great through the entire race.  I had a cup of coffee with cream and some Greek yogurt at 5:30am.  I supplemented with salt and drank plenty of water.  I was not even hungry for hours after the event.  I ate lunch around 2pm. My glucose was in the 70's and my ketones were 2.2 in the afternoon.  I was definitely burning fat!  I was on such a high that lasted into the night!  Great race and looking forward to my next Tri, with my sister, on Thanksgiving.
